CMC ALSO BUILDS COMMUNITIES
At CMC, we’re big believers in building a strong infrastructure — and there’s none more important than the communities in which we operate. From partnering with the Gary Sinise Foundation and R.I.S.E. Program to construct better homes for physically-challenged veterans to sponsoring local organizations engaged in a variety of pursuits, CMC is committed to improving lives in the places we call home. In big ways and small, our goal is to help make our communities stronger, healthier, more inclusive, and more vibrant.
Being an active, contributing member of the communities where we live and work is one of the pillars of CMC’s Guiding Principles. We operate in many small towns and are proud that the culture of caring and sense of family within our business extends to these communities as well.
Our social outreach initiatives reflect what resonates most with our employees. We give back to our communities through financial support, in-kind gifts of steel and other construction products, as well as employee volunteerism for causes they care about.

Beyond these corporate partnerships, there are small town and neighborhood organizations throughout the United States and Poland that our local employees are involved with, some with very long relationships. Last year alone, CMC contributed in some way to more than 200 local charities or events.

Helping build houses for veterans
We are proud to have a corporate partnership with the Gary Sinise Foundation. Through supporting the R.I.S.E. program (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment), CMC is helping to build highly automated smart homes that allow severely wounded veterans to regain self-reliance and mobility. A partnership with the Gary Sinise Foundation is a natural fit for CMC as we employ many veterans at our steel making facilities.
To date, we have contributed to eight smart homes. We specifically choose R.I.S.E. projects near our facilities so that our local employees can participate through volunteering in the home builds and welcoming the veterans into their new homes at the dedication ceremonies.
We also have an annual fundraising campaign, donating a percentage of sales during the month of November in honor of Veteran’s Day.
Keeping our CMC family (and their families) healthy
American Heart Association is another organization we support at the corporate level. There is nothing more important than the health of all CMC employees and their families, and we especially encourage them to focus on their heart health. Our Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, Jennifer Durbin, currently serves on the Dallas Board of the American Heart Association and is the community volunteer chair of the 2022-2023 Dallas Go Red For Women movement. Our CEO, Barbara Smith, is also a champion for the cause and has served on both the Dallas and Tampa Boards of the American Heart Association. Through reminders, tips and suggestions for improving heart health, our focus on the team’s health and well-being starts at the top.
The house(s) that CMC built
CMC has supported Habitat for Humanity for more than fifteen years. What began with a handful of volunteers from a single CMC location in Seguin, Texas has grown into company-wide support with the efforts of volunteers at CMC facilities across the country. We aim to connect our volunteerism efforts with our employees’ talents and passions, including building and creating stronger communities.
In fact, one particular project for the Guadalupe Valley chapter was named the “CMC House” by Habitat for Humanity partners due to the large contributions and number of employees who volunteered. As many as 40 CMC volunteers joined the project weekly, spending their Saturdays working on the home.
